The (non) joys of wireless home broadband

As you may have known, I got myself a wonderful piece of kit known as wireless home broadband, which is this fancy little modem that uses HSDPA for broadband in the home. I know that Netvigator sells it as well, but I decided to go for the underdog, Smartone Vodafone.

First impressions? It’s alright, but the speeds are far from their 7.2 they advertise, instead being a lowly 1.something Mbps, but the sleek modem is a router as well, so I’ll give them points for being cool that way. Too bad no USB port, I couldn’t connect my printer without having to connect it to ANOTHER router that does have one. Boo.

The speeds can be shown in more detail here, as I’ve done a test and to be honest, not very broadbandy.

I’m downloading a TV show on BitTorrent (hopefully I’ll also know about secret “unlimited” limits as well as throttles, if there are any, but I doubt the Vodafone here is as evil as the one in the UK), which is The Border, if you must know, and the speed is insanely slow. 2 kb/s. No, wait! 4 kb/s! No, 24 kb/s! Ridiculous.

This seems like the start to a horrible future. I have another 24 months of this (fuck you, contracts) to go. I’ll post more about this in the future.
